United Nations International Day of Peace 2024
Today, September 21, 2024, is International Day of Peace (“World Peace Day”), sponsored by the United Nations. International Day of Peace “epitomizes the United Nations joint aspiration for a world devoid of discord and turmoil.” The 2024 theme is “cultivate a culture of peace” and the purpose is to “commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace within and among all nations and peoples.” The UN’s message of peace in 2024: “Wars begin in the minds of men, so it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed.”
Today also is the last day of summer before tomorrow’s Autumn Equinox, where the cycle of Earth’s seasons is in balance. However, the world as a whole is far from a balanced state due in part to many regional conflicts, including but far from limited to the war between Ukraine and its allies and the invading forces from Russia; and the multi-level conflict between Israel and its neighbors, in the form of Hamas as fought in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah forces as fought in Lebanon. These and other conflicts in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and South America threaten to destabilize the world as a whole. Many thousands of people have died on all sides of the active conflicts and the subsequent cultural and environmental destabilization. Such catastrophes are further exasperated by ever increasing climate change.
Urgent cease fires, committed fruitful negotiations, and binding long-term resolution of differences must prevail so we can achieve the vital 2024 goals for peace among all nations and peoples. Yes, there must be a defense of peace throughout the world and a construct of peace in the minds of all men. This is as important now than ever. War is never the answer, peace must prevail.
